Zombieland
- Matt O'Brien
Stars:
Jesse Eisenberg..........................................Columbus
Woody Harrelson........................................Tallahassee
Emma Stone..................................................Witchita
Abigail Breslin.............................................Little Rock
From the moment I saw the trailers for this film I sighed and thought, here we go again with another dreadful attempt at re-hashing Shaun of the Dead, a film that redefined the Horror comedy genre. Thankfully, to my surprise I was proven wrong....BIG time. Not only had this film surpassed my expectations, it had in my opinion, left Shaun for dead!
The story gets a running start as Columbus (Jessie Eisenberg) explains to us how the world has turned into a zombie wasteland. The opening credits are very well crafted, showing us slow motion footage of zombies attacking the hapless public, while Metallica’s “for whom the bell tolls” plays over them. This really sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Columbus guides us through the dangers of living in Zombieland listing the rules he lives by to survive, which sporadically appear throughout the film cleverly blending in with the scene. He meets up with Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), who delivers perhaps the stand out performance of the whole film. They in turn meet sisters Wichita (Emma Stone) and the “12 going on 20” Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), both of whom are terrific as the sweet, yet tough heroines. They travel west in search of an ever elusive zombie free zone.
The best part of this film is the surprising amount of heart there is. The plot is riddled with heaps of comedy spots, while also delivering the gore you would see in a George A Romero film, yet there are moments of warmth between the characters that have a real feel of sincerity. By the end of it you feel invested in the story and the characters, which is the most important thing for a film of any genre to do.
I can categorically state that Zombieland has become one of my favourite films, with its mix of great dialogue, endearing characters and consistently hysterical tone. This will no doubt become a cult classic which is exactly what it deserves.
