Half Baked
- Matt O'Brien
Stars -
Dave Chappelle................................................Thurgood Jenkins
Guilermo Diaz...................................................Scarface
Jim Breuer............................................................Brian
Harland Williams..............................................Kenny Davis
Rachel True...........................................................Mary Jane Potman
Clarence Williams III.........................................Samson Sim
This film is one of my all-time favourite “guilty pleasures”, I love to just turn my brain off and laugh at the jokes. But, much like a weekend trip to Bangkok, I feel dirty afterwards. The ridiculously over the top humour is obviously aimed at its core demographic, “stoners” (of which I am not) so I always wonder, “Why the hell did I enjoy that so much?”
The “story” follow’s pothead Thurgood Jenkins (Dave Chappelle) and his two friends’ mission to come up with a million dollars, to post bail for their cohort who accidentally killed a police horse and was sent to prison. The group decides to sell “super weed” that Thurgood gets access to through his job as a janitor at a pharmaceutical company. They join forces with rapper “Sir smoke-a-lot” as they face dealing rivals lead by “Samson Simon. All the while Thurgood pursues “Mary Jane” (yes, that’s her name), the anti-drug daughter of a rival dealer.
There are also some really funny (and some very predictable) cameos in this film (probably where they used most of the budget), that really add some flavour to proceedings.
All in all, “half baked” is an original idea that does a good job to hold up in a market flooded with cheap “stoner flicks”. I will admit it makes me question my intelligence when I sit down and watch movies that others class as garbage, but it’s not meant to be a classic, it does its job by entertaining you and letting you escape from reality for a couple of hours.
