As you may be aware by looking at our “Most anticipated releases” section, I had some big expectations for “Green Lantern”. I will admit that with the recent success stories that were “X-Men: First Class” and “Thor”, there was a lot of pressure on this film to perform well, which may have led to my overall reaction of “meh”.
There was definitely nothing special about “Green Lantern”, equally there was nothing inherently bad about it either. Unfortunately this film was set up to fail as soon as “x-men” and “Thor” came out first, had the reverse happened we might not have seen “Green Lantern” get completely torn apart by critics the way it has.
Following the comic book loosely, the film follows the exploits of test pilot “Hal Jordan” (Reynolds), who is granted a mystical green ring that bestows otherworldly powers upon him. Along with the powers, Hal is granted membership into an intergalactic legion of heroes, tasked with keeping peace in the universe.
We are introduced to a host of characters throughout the film, but it seems a little forced and crammed up with information, likely a good sign for the expected sequel which should be free to expand on the plot having already introduced us to the major players.
There is enough action and good character interaction in the film to keep most moviegoers happy, but for the comic book fans there may be a level of frustration. I truly believe there is a big market for the “Green Lantern” franchise; they just need to be smarter with the storytelling and stay true to the loyal fan base they already have. If you’re a fan of comic adaptations, do yourself a favour and go and see this movie, it’s not the greatest comic movie out there, but there is definitely great potential for the possible follow ups.
Stay tuned after the credits...…
